How young is too young for a tattoo? That law in most states holds at 18-years-of-age. While piercing ages vary with permission from parent or guardian, the tattoo laws are pretty strict. However, people under 18 seem to regularly have tattoos, so what’s the deal? With most states not allowing anyone under 18 to get a tattoo regardless of circumstance, some wonder whether the government is sticking its nose where it doesn’t belong. One state recently set a precedent by charging a mother who tattooed her children. The charge has raised many questions, like whether or not the circumstances surroundings the tattoo, or the tattoo itself, makes any difference. Here’s the story of the mother who was charged with child abuse after tattooing children.

The Mother Chantilly L. Thomas, a mother, was arrested in New York after police received a tip that she’d mistreated her sons.

The Boys Her sons, 12 and 13, had their hands tattooed. The younger of the two boys had “Ride Or Die” tattooed on the back of his hand. The older boy had a lightning bolt on his hand.

Method Unlike past, similar cases, the mother of these two boys actually did the tattoos herself with a tattoo gun that she purchased. Thomas was not licensed, nor was she practiced at tattooing.
