Hello Gals and Guys,
It’s Isabelle Gloria and Elaine Valerie writing a little blogpost for you peeps today. We’re two Pinup girls from Germany who live and love the vintage-lifestyle to the fullest. We’re regularly writing on our retro-themed blog called “The Vintage Romance“, sharing photo shoots and everyday-talks about our vintage inspired lives.
The summer season we’re enjoying right now is our favorite time of the year. It all feels so easy, the days are longer and warm and the nature is simply beautiful and blooms in all its colors. Are you in the same summer-mood like we are?
We’re overly excited to finally wear our pretty swing dresses with voluminous petticoats in bright, shiny colors, and we’re so happy that we’re almost about to burst when we think about the upcoming months, as the season has just started. So what’s the magic about summertime for us vintage girls? Oh yes, right. It’s the perfect time for enjoyment and pleasures, cool cocktails and hot summer nights with good music, maybe a little dance and many, many delightful dresses. And last but not least: it is the most amazing season to turn into a 24/7 50s-retro-bombshell. Sun in your curly hair, cat eye sunnies for the untouchable yet lovely attitude, floral prints, full circle skirts, headscarves in all colors imaginable and a bright lipstick on your smiling lips while sipping on the most delicious drink in town. But here comes the problem already. We’ve heard of some lovely reader’s issues about not knowing how to get that vintage look right. They love the look and would like to make it work for themselves but as beginners they don’t know where to start. Are you one of them, too? Maybe you’ve just stumbled upon this whole retro-world and also want to dive into it? We want to help out a little and give you guys some tips about how we do it, how we style for this summer season and what it takes to dress up in a glamorous 1950s style. The golden rules: First: Get a lovely dress! A wide swing dress with a fluffy petticoat underneath, like we chose for our photos, or a tight, flattering tiki dress that reminds of holiday with its wild prints. In any case of doubt: anything with a floral print will be just fine and always perfect, we promise! Make sure to compliment your own figure. You don’t need to work for your ‘pin up body’, you already have it, because this style fits every woman in all sizes and shapes. If you have a small waist and wide hips like Isabelle, emphasize your tiny middle and wear something that’s tight around your waist. If you want your hips to appear smaller, go for a circle skirt. If you want to take advantage of your wide hips, choose a skin tight dress made of a steady fabric (stretchy cotton for example tends to look unflattering if you wear it really tight) and make your curves stand out. If you’re quite tall like Elaine, always make sure that your dress is long enough. Not because a mini dress is not beautiful, but the perfect cut for a vintage dress has the skirt down to your knee. It doesn’t look as good if it ends right above or even higher. Second: Make up and hair. We love to curl our hair, because it instantly gives you the vintage look and makes it easy to style authentic looks. Try different ways to curl it and find out what method suits your hair best: With a curling iron, hot rollers, sponge rollers or even the flat iron can do the magic. We both needed months to make sure how it works best for us personally and we’re still learning with every new hairstyle that we try out. It’s a never ending journey, but it’s a beautiful process! Take your time, watch tutorials on the Internet, check out blogs and try to copy hairstyles that you like. Even though you might think you can never do this: You will! Sooner or later. vintage hairstyles are no magical trick or only something for professionals, it is about knowing your hair type and not being afraid to fail at some point. Practice, practice, practice! A simple black eyeliner, combined with a bright red lipstick are total basics and the key for every retro look. A matte porcelain skin always gives this look the final finish. If it’s not given to you naturally, a translucent powder will help you out to avoid a shiny forehead or nose, no matter what skin tone you are. Third: Smile! Just because it makes you so beautiful and gives you a positive attitude. Who wants to see a beautiful lady in a floral dress with a sad face?! We wish you a wonderful, lovely summertime and lots of fun with your own glamorous vintage look! Love,
Elaine Valerie & Isabelle Gloria (Models / Styling / Photos: The Vintage Romance / TheVRomance on Facebook)
