After growing tired of the dull day to day life and constant beatings she received as a nun, teenager Catalina decided that she would make her escape. She ran away after stealing money from an aunt and took her habit with her, refashioning it into a man’s suit of the times. Her new attire complete, she cut her hair and went on to live her new life as Francisco de Loyola. As Francisco, Catalina was able to navigate as a violent, quick to anger duelist who wrote her own memoir. She was pardoned of her (many, many) crimes by the pope, who also gave her special dispensation to continue dressing as a man.
