If you can make the 1990s look like the 1950s, or vice versa, that’s what Cry Baby does. A teenage romantic comedy directed by John Waters, Cry Baby is about a 1950s rebel teenager Wade Walker, played by a young Johnny Depp. Cry Baby is a “drape”, which means that he’s part of the rebel and delinquent subculture of the town, while the other people are squares. He falls in love with a “square” girl. We’ve seen this story many times, but Cry Baby is a huge classic movie and if you love rockabilly you should totally watch it. It’s a comedy so don’t watch it if you take things too seriously and you’re easily offended! The movie is full of awesome characters and costumes, but our top favourite is Wanda Woodward. Wanda is played by Traci Lord, a controversial actress who started acting in porn movies when she was still underage. We must say that the casting was perfect, if Traci was born in the 50s, she would have been a Wanda for sure!
Wanda is the stereotype of the bad girl, similar to Rizzo in Grease. She is outgoing, slightly aggressive, tough and sexy. If there are men around her, you’ll see her flirting for sure. That’s her nature, she’s a born rebel and if she was a real person we would interview her on our Rebel Girl column! Wanda dresses accordingly to her behaviour. She rocks the most amazing polka dot halter dresses, pencil skirts, tops and she has the best hairstyle ever.
What are Wanda’s look key elements?
“I wouldn’t be caught dead in a full skirt.” Wanda from Cry BabyThis statement alone makes you understand a lot about Wanda Woodward. But let’s see her wardrobe staples in more details. Leather jacket. Wanda is always wearing a black leather jacket with “Cry Baby” written on the back. This is because she’s part of Wade Walker’s gang Cry Baby (just like the T-birds in Grease, we’re sure you remember those). You should probably just stick to a plain black leather jacket. In the real world “cry baby” is not exactly a compliment. Skirts and Dresses. She wouldn’t be caught dead in a full skirt, you know that now. Wanda usually wear tight skirts and dresses, mostly pencil shapes. Her skirts and dresses always have a single slit in the bottom. The most famous Wanda look is the white polka dot halter dress, everyone loves that dress and we can see why! Ladybug Top – Bow Waist Pencil Skirt – Concealed Platform Peep Toe Pump Heels. We only see our favourite Cry Baby wearing flats once in the movie. For the rest of her awesome outfits, she’s always wearing heels. We’d like to mention the amazing outfit she’s wearing when she runs away from home after meeting the exchange student Inga: a pair of amazing white mules that only Wanda could pull off so well! Makeup. Wanda’s makeup is quite heavy and bold. She’s always wearing a winged eyeliner and a bright red lipstick. Of course she also has a flawless complexion and perfect eyebrows, but eyeliner and lipstick are a must. Hair. Her hairstyles are also always impeccable. She’s usually wearing her blonde hair pulled back by two barrettes on the sides, and she has a very short fringe, while the length is teased to get volume and usually styled in big barrel curls.
