We have recently talked about the Ramones and their minimalistic clothing style: ripped jeans, old t-shirts and sneakers. Heavy rockers picked up the style, and passed it upon the grunge 90s kids. Grunge is a music genre: like almost all the alternative clothing styles, they were born from a music scene. Grunge is no exception: it was born in Seattle around the 90s and the band that spreaded the message around the world was Nirvana. This music genre is just the sum of a lot of influences and styles: the Ramones, Pixies, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Neil Young, Sonic Youths. We can say that the first grunge band was Mudhoney, founded by former members of the Green River, they embody all the grunge movement themes: angst, anti-conformism, social alienation, apathy. Even the look represented this themes well: Washington grunge musicians did not care much about their clothes and they used to buy things in thrift stores. That's the reason behind the worn out t-shirts, the flannel shirts and the ripped jeans.
Mens grunge clothing survived the decline of the grunge movement and many people still rock this style. Especially in these days when the 90s are seeing a surge in popularity, guys and girls wear oversized plaid shirts and skinny jeans, worn out sneakers and messy hair.
