If you look for “How to be soft grunge” on Youtube you’ll find a ton of videos that tell you how to be soft grunge. But those videos are actually making fun of the soft grunge trend, which we think it’s quite cool (if we don’t mention the teeny-tiny bands t-shirts issue.) This is an intro to one of those Yotube videos:
Soft grunge: a term used to describe modern day teenagers, typically girls between the ages of 14-18, who like to create a “hardcore” persona on Tumblr by reblogging pictures of inverted crosses, dip-dyed hair, ying-yang symbols and toilets. They like to pretend that they listen to grunge music by wearing stylish Nirvana tees that match their $200 pair of Doc Martens. If you were to ask them who the Misfits were, they’d probably say anyone who isn’t sporting spikes this season.Although this might be a sarcastic description of the style, it has some elements of truth in it. If Tumblr didn’t exist, soft grunge wouldn’t have spread the way it did. Soft grunge is about wearing bands t-shirts, but that doesn’t mean that who’s wearing them doesn’t know the band. You can totally wear Doc Martens whether you’re soft grunge or not, and it’s not Doc Martens lovers fault if they’re expensive. And the Misfits joke… who doesn’t know the Misfits? We prefer this definition of “soft grunge”:
Soft Grunge is a modernization of early 1990s grunge culture, that also incorporates elements of hipster and gothic subculture. That said, we don’t like wearing bands t-shirts if we don’t know the band, but we absolutely love dip-dyed hair, boots and the soft grunge style. Let’s see some of the soft grunge main characteristics so you know when you see it. Or you can rock the look if you like it!
