In 2015, a photograph of 10 breastfeeding active duty military moms went viral. Taken by US Air Force veteran Tara Ruby, the photograph was part of a collection to decorate the walls of a new nursery room at Fort Bliss in El Paso. Ruby, who wanted to show her support for the moms, was not deterred by some of the negative comments the photo received. In fact, she went on to create a stunning collection of breastfeeding moms wearing a variety of uniforms. Ruby’s work, and that of another photographer, Vanessa Simmons, not only helped to normalize moms breastfeeding in the military, but also led to a policy that provides help and support for them to continue to be there for their babies.
